Obituary

Ishmael Quam, 75, died Friday, May 26, 1989, the result of a one car accident. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 30, 1989, at 3:00 p.m., from Spring Creek Lutheran Church, Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, with Pastor Robert Lehner officiating. Mrs. Robert Lehner provided organ music and Mr. David Rupp was soloist. Honorary Casket Bearers were the Spring Creek Lutheran Church Council. Casket Bearers were Michael and Don Ramstad, Jay and Lee Rupprecht, Carolyn and Patrick Quam, Shelley and Rick Mortenson and Chris, Tract and Teresa Bittner. Interment was at the Spring Creek Lutheran Cemetery of Normania Township of rural Clarkfield. Ishmael Conrad Quam was born July 30, 1913, to George C. and Nettie A. Oraas Quam and was baptized in the Lutheran faith. He attended country School District 25 in Swede Prairie Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, and graduated from the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, Minnesota. On October 25, 1941, he was married to Erma Svennungson of Hanley Falls, Minnesota. Ishmael and Erma moved to the farm they bought across the road from his father's farmplace. To this union four children were born, Elaine Irene, Norma LeAnn, Grant Stanley and a daughter who passed away at birth. His wife Erma passed away in February, 1951. Ishmael was blessed with one granddaughter, Carolyn Quam and six grandsons, Lee and Jay Rupprecht, Michael and Don Ramstad and Patrick and Steven Quam. Ishmael served as chairman of the Swede Prairie Farmers Union, as clerk of District 25, and as Chairman and Treasurer of Spring Creek Lutheran Church of rural Clarkfield. He was a lifelong member of Spring Creek Lutheran Church. He farmed until 1969 and then worked for Yellow Medicine County and for AMPI in Clarkfield and Dawson, Minnesota, for fourteen years until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nettie; an infant daughter; his wife Erma; his father George; and one infant brother. He is survived by one sister, Orda and her husband, Harry Mortenson, St. Paul, Minnesota; brother-in-law, Omar Svennungson, Granite Falls, Minnesota; daughters, Elaine and husband, Melven Rupprecht of Isanti, Minnesota, Norma and husband David Ramstad of Buffalo, Minnesota; son, Grant Quam and wife Cathy of Owatonna, Minnesota; and seven grandchildren. Ishmael touched the hearts of everyone, whether it was just with a smile, a word, a handshake or a hug. His faith in God and love of home and family made him "special" and made you glad you knew him.
