Iona Gilma Barkelew was born March 23, 1914, in Swede Prairie Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, to Oscar and Emma (Sather) Nelson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Clarkfield High School and then worked at the Clarkfield Bakery. In later years she clerked at Mork's Hardware. She married Lyle Barkelew on June 5, 1946, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Clarkfield, Minnesota. They lived and farmed in Stony Run Township for 24 years. Iona was very involved in her church's activities serving as Sunday School teacher, Ladies Aid, Mission Society, Circle. She was an active member of North Stony Run Homemaker's, Farm Bureau, Hospital and Care Center Auxiliaries. Iona was in a lot of volunteer work, such as Bloodmobile, Care Center activities, RSVP, and others. Iona passed away Thursday, December 19, 1991, at her home in Clarkview Apartments in Clarkfield at the age of 77 years. She is survived by her brother, Nefton and wife Elaine; her sister, Elaine and husband Jack Allen of El Segundo, California; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lyle in 1970; an infant daughter Lyla Ione; and a brother Lorren.
