Howard Millard Hanson was born on December 4, 1918, to Orville and Maria Gudmundson Hanson in Tyro Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Lucas Lutheran Church, of Normania Township where he has been a lifelong member. He received his elementary education in rural school District #86 and graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1936. Howard and Deloryce E. Severson were married on July 31, 1941, at the parsonage in Cottonwood, Minnesota by Rev. H. J. Madland. Two children added blessings to this marriage: Ruth Ann in 1952 and Liane Fay in 1956. Howard loved the farm and spent most of his life working the soil. The family moved to Clarkfield in 1964 where he worked at the ASCS office for ten years. Later, he worked for Oak Farms and for many years helped area farmers in the busy season. He served on various church boards, as well as the Clarkfield Memorial Hospital Board. He was active in Senior Citizens and was always willing to help anyone who needed it. Among his many hobbies was collecting model tractors and old farm tractors. Howard passed away on Thursday evening, April 8, 1993, at Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital. He had attained the age of 74 years 4 months and 4 days. Howard is survived by his daughter, Liane of Clarkfield; his daughter Ruth Ann and husband John Schmidt of Marshall; three grandchildren: James Andersen and wife Lisa of Marshall; Amy Weltin and husband Paul of Alexandria; Emilie Schmidt of Marshall; and three great granddaughters: Brynn, Kelly and Nicole; three sisters: Bertha Hanson of Cottonwood; Mrs. Joe (Charlotte) Hoff of Cottonwood; and Mrs. Leslie (Una Marie) Lamb of New Hope; his sisters-in-law: Mrs. Arlo (Arleen) Hawkinson of Cottonwood; Mrs. Clifton (Erma) Ellingson of Marshall; his brother-in-law Luverne and wife Dorothy Severson of Cottonwood; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Howard in death were his wife, Deloryce, and his parents.
