IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hildur
Schjelderup
June 21, 1884 – May 26, 1975
Hildur Schjelderup was born June 21, 1884, at Forsaa on the Tysfjord, Nordland, Norway. She was one of nine children born to Wilatz Bing Schjelderup and Cecilia Hedvig Winther Schjelderup. She lost her mother at the age of two years, and four brothers and a sister several years later during a scarlet fever epicemic. When she was eleven years old, her father, a sister and a brother were drowned when a violent storm overtook them while crossing the Tysfjord for a Confirmation lesson. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Tysfjord and confirmed in the Domkirken at Stavanger, Norway, where she had gone to live with an aunt at the age of sixteen. Miss Schjelderup, sister of the late Mrs. M.M. Hauge, was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and had lived in Clarkfield for a time when she served as office nurse for Dr. M.M. Hauge in 1918. Emigrating to the United States at the age of 21, following her sister Anna and brother Sigurd, who left Norway in 1893 and 1898, respectively, she worked in Minneapolis for a time, spent several years near Bigfork, Minnesota, homesteading a quarter section of timberland. She returned to Minneapolis and made her home near Augsburg College with her brother Sigurd. For the past years, she has resided at Ebenezer Home in Minneapolis; prior to this time, she had worked for years in the home of the late George Sverdrup, former president of Augsburg College. Hildur passed away May 26, 1975, at the Ebenezer Home in Minneapolis. Survivors include a half-brother Johan and half-sister Wilma of Trondheim, Norway. She also leaves to mourn her the following nieces and nephews: Dr. M.I. Hauge, Waldemar Hauge, and Mrs. Bergliot Stueland of Clarkfield, Cecelia Hauge of Minneapolis, Dr. Erling Hauge of Scandia, Minnesota, and Mrs. Dagmar Akre of Chicago, Illinois.
