Obituary

Hilda Emelie Varpness Johnson was born on a farm in Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, on April 3, 1901, the daughter of Oluf Varpness and Oline (Staff) Varpness. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. Martin Romstad at St. Lucas Lutheran Church. She attended rural school district No. 2. On April 7, 1924, she was happily united in marriage to Joseph Johnson from Minneota by Pastor Erickson of Granite Falls, Minnesota. This union was blessed with six daughters: Ordis (Mrs. Melvin Cakebread), and Ella (Mrs. Lee Kasper) both of Minneapolis, Hazel (Mrs. Omar Tongen) of Hazel Run, Minnesota, Ethel (Mrs. Norman Swennes) of Hanley Falls, Minnesota, Dorie of Minneapolis and Esther whom God called to rest as a child. The first years of their marriage were spent farming in the Minneota community. In March 1933 they moved to a farm near Hanley Falls which they bought. Here they farmed until the death of her husband in 1946, after which the family continued to make their home on the farm. She was a faithful member of Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church for many years and an active member of the Mission Guild. She was a kind and devoted mother, always more concerned about others than herself. She continued to remember those who were ill or to be remembered in some other way even after her own health failed. She became aware of her present illness in February of this year, after which she underwent surgery in Minneapolis on March 3rd and enjoyed reasonably good health for the next few months. Part of this time was spent at her home amongst her friends and neighbors. She was suddenly and very peacefully called to her heavenly home on Sunday afternoon, October 26, 1958, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Cakebread of Minneapolis where she had received such loving care for the past two months and also stayed while convalescing after surgery. She leaves to mourn her passing five daughters, one brother, Carlton Varpness of Cottonwood, Minnesota, ten grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. IN MEMORY OF MRS. HILDA E.
