Obituary

Herbert Arthur Saumer was born in Montevideo, Minnesota, on January 26, 1909, to John and Hannah (Johnson) Egan. He was baptized at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo and later confirmed there on May 18, 1923. Hannah married Harry Saumer in 1916 and Herbert was adopted and raised by Harry. Herb attended 12 years of school in Montevideo and one year at St. Olaf College. On February 5, 1933, he married Ruth Gamm of Montevideo. To this union were born five children; Betty (Mrs. Palmer Grinager), Jill (Mrs. Clemens Zentner), Kenneth, Carol (Mrs. LeRoy Williamson) and Lanny. Herb spent most of his adult years as an Elevator Manager in the Minnesota communities of Montevideo, Ortonville, Watson, Rochester and Avoca. He enjoyed singing in choirs in Ortonville and Montevideo. He also enjoyed many outdoor activities such as golf, gardening, fishing, all sports and playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Herb retired from the G.T.A. Elevator in 1970 and moved in with his daughter, Betty in 1973 where he remained until he was taken ill in June and moved into the Clarkfield Care Center in July of 1990. Herb passed away on February 12, 1991, at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital at the age of 82 years. Herb is survived by his five children; Betty (and Palmer) Grinager of Boyd, Minnesota, Jill (and Clem) Zentner of Billings, Montana. Kenneth (and Diane) Saumer of Brainard, Minnesota, Carol (and LeRoy) Williamson of Montevideo, Minnesota, and Lanny (and Karen) Saumer of River Falls, Wisconsin; nineteen grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; one step-sister, Linnie Cross Saumer of Reno, Nevada; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Veiman of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Herb in death were his parents, John Egan and Hannah and his step-father, Harry Saumer; his wife, Ruth; one grandchild, Stacia Saumer; and one step-brother, Sylvan Saumer. He will be sadly missed by his loving family and friends. Blessed be his memory.
