January 22, 1923 – August 16, 2005
Herbert Torfin Mauland was born in Vallers Township, Lyon County, Minnesota, on January 22, 1923, to Oscar and Hulda (Brenden) Mauland. He was baptized on March 11, 1923, at St. Lucas Lutheran Church. He was the first baby baptized in the present St. Lucas Church building. He was confirmed on May 16, 1937, at St. Lucas Church. He graduated from Cottonwood High School, Cottonwood, Minnesota, in 1941. On May 29, 1948, he was united in marriage to Lila Olson at Israel Lutheran Church in Swede Prairie Township of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, and they were blessed with seven children. He farmed in Normania Township of Yellow Medicine County until his retirement. He served as custodian, trustee and was on the cemetery board at St. Lucas. He also served on the Board of the Farmers Coop Elevator of Cottonwood. Herb was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed trapping, hunting, fishing and canoeing. He loved living by the river and spent hours fishing and relaxing at his favorite spots. He also enjoyed bird watching, woodworking, wood carving and building things, especially toys for the children and grandchildren. He spent many years as the neighborhood handyman. If it was broken, Herb could fix it. Herb was a wonderful and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend and will be truly missed. Herbert died Tuesday, August 16, 2005, at the Granite Falls Hospital, Granite Falls, Minnesota, at the age of 82 years. He is survived by his wife, Lila of Cottonwood, Minnesota, and their seven children: Beverly (Larry) Isaackson, Diane Gregoire, Judy (Wayne) Van Maldeghem, all of Cottonwood, Mary Mauland of New Ulm, Minnesota, Lois (Doug) Albin, Clarkfield, Minnesota, Laurie (Gary) Knudsen, Spicer, Minnesota, and Arlen (Judy) Mauland of St. Peter, Minnesota. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Orton. Blessed be his memory.
