Herbert Theodore Christensen was born December 9, 1913, in Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, to parents Herman and Thea (Swenson) Christensen. He was baptized and confirmed at Spring Creek Lutheran Church of Normania Township. He graduated from Clarkfield High School, Clarkfield, Minnesota, in 1932. Herbert farmed from 1932 to 1942. In 1942, he enlisted in the US Navy and became a trainer in anti-aircraft gunnery. He was also an aviation radio technician. At the end of World War II, he returned to his farm from overseas and said he would never leave his farm again. Herbert married Evelyn Nelson on June 10, 1951, at the Hazel Run Lutheran Church, Hazel Run, Minnesota. They farmed outside of Clarkfield until their retirement in 1976. He was a member of Clarkfield Lutheran Church and also former Commander of Clarkfield American Legion Post #198. He worked many years as a clerk at the Clarkfield Post Office. One of his great pleasures was attending local auctions. Herbert and Evelyn moved to Valhalla Apartments of Clarkfield in December of 2001. Herbert passed away peacefully at his apartment on Thursday, September 1, 2005, at the age of 91 years, 8 months, and 23 days. He is survived by his son Bob (and Nancy) of Rye, Colorado and daughter Patty (and friend Martin Hallman) of Clarkfield. He is also survived by his sister LuElla Stokke; sisters-in-law: Clara Christensen, Darlene Christensen, and Dorothy Gramer; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters: Irene Rodness and Mayvis Etrheim; and brothers: Hanford, Oren, Clifford, and Walter. Herb was a kind and gentle father and will be missed by his family and friends.
