Henry William Ernst was born on September 22, 1888, at Guthrie County in Iowa, the son of Tobias and Elizabeth (Mueller) Ernst, both natives of Germany. He was one of a family of eight: William, John and Pete, deceased; Lena (Mrs. Willie Schirm) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, George of New Hall, Iowa, Adam of Adair, Iowa, and Mary (Mrs. V.D. Weichman) of New Hall, Minnesota. He was baptized October 22, 1888, at Adair, Iowa, and later confirmed in the same St. John's Lutheran Church in 1904. He attended rural school in his home community and was engaged in the occupation of farming all his life. On February 2, 1910, he was united in marriage to Pearl Long in the country church in their Iowa community. In December 1912, the young couple followed her family, the Andy Longs to Yellow Medicine County. They farmed a year near Hazel Run and then operated a farm south of Clarkfield now operated by the Jack Londgrens. They then returned to Iowa where they farmed seven years before returning to Yellow Medicine County. They operated a farm in Normania Township three years and then moved onto the then Gough farm east of Clarkfield where they farmed 21 years or until moving to their present home in 1950 in Clarkfield. The couple was blessed with three children: Mrs. Elois Berkvam of Granite Falls, Minnesota, Glenn of Minneapolis, and Doris (Mrs. Eugene Meyer) of Hazel Run, Minnesota. Mr. Ernst passed away Monday afternoon, July 24, 1967, in Clarkfield, at the age of 78 years. Left to mourn his sudden departure are his wife, Pearl, three children, eleven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were a son-in-law, Orville Berkvam, and a grandson, Irvin Berkvam.
