Helmer Halvorson, World War II veteran, was born January 23, 1900, in Minnesota, to parents Jacob and Anne (Santorv) Halvorson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Bergen Lutheran Church, Stony Run Township. He spent his early youth on the farm with his 11 brothers and sisters. The following years were involved in farm work. In 1942 he was united in marriage to Hulda Peterson. Employed with the local creamery until it closed, he then accepted work at the Granite Falls Creamery until he retired at age 62. Helmer and Hulda were custodians of the Augustana Church and the local bank for many years. Helmer passed away June 6, 1977, at the Clarkfield Community Hospital, at the age of 77. Survivors include his wife and six children: Dennis of Anoka, Eunice (Mrs. DeWayne) Simpson of Minneapolis, Charles of Anoka, Ralph of Huntington Beach, California, Nancy (Mrs. David) Lindall of Chino, California, Betty (Mrs. Ronald) Lysholm of Minneapolis; 16 grandchildren; two sisters: Alice (Mrs. Harry) Talley of California, and Theressa (Mrs. Ben) Peterson of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers: Henry, Clarence, John, Selmer, Andrew and James; and three sisters: Clara, Nellie and Camilla.
