Obituary

Helgi Jonas A. Josephson was born in Vopnafjord, Iceland, January 20, 1890, to parents Arnie and Fredreka Josephson. Helgi's parents came to Canada in the year 1896 and the same year moved to Minneota, Minnesota, where the family was engaged in farming. Helgi and his brother, Frank continued farming there until Helgi married Nellie Marie Nelson of Canby, Minnesota, in June, 1928, and the couple settled on a farm just south of Hanley Falls, Minnesota. In 1936, they moved to another farm north of Hanley Falls where they lived and toiled until he retired from farming. In 1956, they pruchased a home in Hanley Falls and lived ther until his wife, Nellie, died in 1959. Helgi then moved to Minneapolis in 1961 where he lived his remaining years. Helgi was always interested and active in organizations concerned with the common good. He was short one year of being a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and at one time served as Master of the Lodge in Wood Lake, Minnesota. Included also in his memberships were the Scottish Rite, the Commandary and the Zuhrah Temple of the Shrine. One of his proudest memberships was that of the Icelandic Hekkla Club. He had been a member of the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church for many years. He passed away at the New Hope Nursing Home, New Hope, Minnesota, on June 21, 1970, at the age of 80 years. Helgi is survived by twin daughters, Patsy (Mrs. Arnold Palmer) of Golden Valley, Minnesota, and Betty (Mrs. Harland Fritz) of Minnetonka, Minnesota; five grandchildren: Stephen, Scott and Cynthia Palmer and Warren and Janet Fritz; five sisters: Mrs. Margaret Aarskaug, Madison, Minnesota, Mrs. Mary Sigmar and Mrs. Esther Taft of Glenboro, Manitoba,Canada, Mrs. Fredricka White of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Mrs. Ann Groff of Minneapolis; three brothers: Frank of Minneota, Minnesota, Arni of Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, and Oscar of Cannington, Ortario, Canada; and several nieces and nephews. Helgi is preceded in death by a brother, Siggi, last July in Glenboro. Helgi carried out the many arduous tasks that came the way of a man who chose to set his hand upon the plow. The overpowering problems and handicaps which came his way never caused him to lose the sweetness of his character, his interest in fellow mankind and his love for God. It is said that some are born with greatness and others achieve. Helgi, who achieved his greatness will be remembered by those who were related, worked or laughed with him and found that behind his honest and sincere concern was the ready smile which generated glowing greatness within him.
