Helen (Anderson) Lien was the second white child born in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. She was born in a sod hut in Stony Run Township on January 23, 1870, the daughter of Peter and Anna Anderson. She was confirmed in the Camp Release Church at the age of 16. On July 13, 1898, she was united in marriage to Simon Lien. Her husband passed away November 21, 1911. Mrs. Lien brought up her three daughters in Clarkfield where she resided most of her life. She spent the past seven and one-half years at the Marshall Nursing Home. One daughter, Violet (Mrs. Pet Petroff) also preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Ethel Mooney of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, and Hazel (Mrs. Elmer Wilson) of Granite Falls, Minnesota; one sister, Mrs. Mary Lebet of Maywood, California; seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
