Helen S. Johnson May 27, 1929 ~ October 19, 2014 Helen Shirley (Steffenson) Johnson was born on May 27, 1929, (if you asked her, she was ALMOST 59 1/2!) to Steffen and Hazel (Nelson) Steffenson in rural Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at the Watson Lutheran Church. She spent her childhood years on the family farm near Watson. Helen attended country school near Lac qui Parle Village and in Montevideo. She later obtained her GED in 1982. Helen worked various jobs throughout her life before retiring as the manager of the Boyd Municipal Liquor Store in 1992. Helen then worked part-time at Prairies Edge Casino in Granite Falls as a cashier. In 2001 she retired from the casino. Helen enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking and baking. She traveled as she was able, and looked forward every week to playing cards at the Boyd Senior Citizens Center. In 2001, Helen was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. After having one Lung removed, and going thru treatment, she fought a courageous battle and lived cancer free for 13 years. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Steffen and Hazel; two brothers: Palmer and Art; and her son, Jerry. Helen is survived by six daughters: Kaye Tanhoff (Barry), Gayle Burrow (Ralph), Jan Nilson (Whitey), Patty Booker (Book), Barb Nilson-Colby, Susan Wilkes (Stan). She has 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren, many cousins, including recently acquainted relatives from Haugesund, Norway. Helen requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Trinity Lutheran Church of Boyd or the Cancer Center at Rice Memorial in Willmar. Ga med fred Mor Dyr.
