Helen Clarice Shaw was born July 30, 1918, daughter of George and Clara (Martens) Gerhardt, at Fairmont, Minnesota. She attended Country School south of Welcome, Minnesota, and graduated from the 8th grade. Helen married Everett Shaw on December 25, 1939, in Iowa. They farmed in the Fairmont-Welcome area until March of 1954, when they moved to Barrett, Minnesota, and bought a farm. They sold the farm and bought a motel in Appleton, Minnesota, in 1963 and operated it until 1973. They owned and operated an On/Off Sale Liquor Store in Cobden, Minnesota, for ten years. They bought a retirement home south of Perham, Minnesota, and lived there for 10 years before moving to Clarkfield, Minnesota, in 1993. Helen loved to garden, cook, can and sew. She moved to Luther Haven Nursing Home, Montevideo, Minnesota, in January of 2002. She was very active at Luther Haven with cooking activities. She loved to play Bingo. She passed away at Luther Haven on Tuesday evening, December 26, 2006, at the age of 88 years, 4 months, and 26 days. She is survived by her five daughters and one son: Marilyn Graff (and her friend Les Sommers) of Eagen, Minnesota, Diane (Roy) Lancaster of Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota, Bonnie (Gene) Muenchow of Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota, Wanda (Kenneth) Benson of Hancock, Minnesota, Wendell (Rhanda) Shaw of Frazee, Minnesota, and Connie (Emanuel) Martinez of Olivia, Minnesota. She is also survived by four brothers: Paul (Gloria) Gerhardt, Alvert (Gladys) Gerhardt, Robert (Doris) Gerhardt and Donald (Gladys) Gerhardt; 18 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters; one brother; three sons-in-law; and one grandson.
