Hazel June (Johnson) Tongen was born November 17, 1926, daughter of Joseph and Hilda (Varpness) Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Hanley Falls High School in 1944. She received her nursing degree from Franklin Hospital in Minneapolis. While working at the Montevideo Hospital she met Omar Tongen. Hazel and Omar were united in marriage on February 5, 1949, at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls. They were the parents of eight children: Dianne, Danny, Duane, David, Darlene, Dennis, Douglas and Danette. Omar and Hazel farmed near Hazel Run for many years. Hazel returned to her nursing career in 1964. She worked in Granite Falls, Clarkfield and Dawson Hospitals and Nursing Homes. Hazel was a joy to work with and a blessing to all that she cared for. She retired in 1991. Hazel moved to Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo about four years ago. She went to Heaven on Friday, October 16, 2015, at the age of 88 years. She was welcomed by Omar, family and friends. She is survived by her children: Dianne (Don) Sampson of Willmar, Minnesota, Danny of Tallahassee, Florida, Duane (Connie) Tongen of Clarkfield, David of Clarkfield, Darlene (Doug) Viessman of Mankato, Minnesota, Dennis of Montevideo, Douglas (Gail) of Hutchinson, Minnesota, Danette Kvistad of Burnsville, Minnesota; 24 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. She is also survived by siblings, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters; and husband, Omar in 2012.
