Obituary

Hattie O. Walter, 96, passed away on January 20,1990, at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dawson, Minnesota. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 1990 at Zion Lutheran Church in Tyro Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, with Pastor Travis Schmidt officiating. Organist was Kathy Jahn and Casket Bearers were Steven, Alan, Bruce, Patrick and Paul Walters and Joel Beninga. Her final resting place is the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. Hattie O. Walter was born November 6, 1893, on a farm in Tyro Townwhip to Gustav and Wilhelmina Bohn. She was baptized by the Reverend Henry Vetter in November 1893 and confirmed by Rev. August Hillger (One of the few Zion ministers who could only speak German) on March 24, 1907. Hattie was one of the best students in his religion class. Mrs. Walter also went to school and graduated from the Omro/Tyro school districts. She learned to play the organ through correspondence courses and served as the first Zion Church organist for over 30 years. On February 18, 1917, she was united in marriged to Eli C. Walter. They were engaged in farming until they retired in Boyd, Minnesota. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Arnold and Evelyn Walter; daughter Eleanor Beninga; daughter-in-law Dorthy Eaton; nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Eli Walter; her son Rev. Gerhard Walter; and grandsons Douglas and Donald Walter.
