Obituary

Harvey Ingerson Brown was born March 24, 1892, the fifth child of pioneers Charles A. Brown and Eunice Robson Brown, at Hanley Falls, Minnesota. His youth was spent at Hanley Falls, where he attended the public schools. In early manhood he attended the Mankato School of Business. Here he joined the Mankato ball club and played professional ball for several seasons. Returning home, he taught school near Echo, Minnesota, and also in District 76 south of Hazel Run. On January 1, 1912, Harvey came to Hazel Run and started cattle buying in partnership with his father, a veteran livestock buyer. Together with this activity he also took up public auctioneering which activity he followed until failing health forced him to quit. For a number of years, he was also personnel manager of the co-operative canning factory at Montevideo and custodian at the Hazel Run Public Schools. On May 3, 1913, Mr. Brown was untied in marriage to Berdey Theresa Nordgren. To them two daughters were born: Verle (Mrs. Fredolph Peterson) of Hazel Run, and Phyllis (Mrs. Harlan Schlee) of Excelsior, Minnesota. Together with Mrs. Brown, these daughters survive him as well as three grandchildren: Jane and Dick Peterson, and Mary Beth Schlee. Harvey was baptized into the Methodist faith, but in 1938, together with his wife and several others, he was confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Hazel Run, by Rev. A. Haugland. A civic-minded man, having the best interests of his community at heart, Mr. Brown was usually in some position of trust during his long residence in the Hazel Run community. Harvey was popular for his musical ability in a small community famous for its bands, choruses and individual musicians. It was in the Hazel Run Band of district championship fame, that Brown was best known as a slide trombonist. He helped keep Hazel Run in the limelight, always loyal, always plugging for the hometown. Besides the nearest survivors, Harvey leaves to mourn him, five brothers: Frank of St. Paul, Dan of Clarkfield, Ben of Olivia, Roy of Fairborn, Ohio, and Reid of Bigfork, Minnesota; a sister, Edna (Mrs. Grant Brakke) of Veblen, South Dakota; and a foster-sister, Mrs. Orlo Davis of McAllen, Texas. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and a sister. Funeral Services Thursday, October 15, 1953, 2:00 p.m. Hazel Run Lutheran Church, Hazel Run Minnesota Clergy Officiating, Rev. A.N.
