Obituary

Harry Dietrich Smith was born to the parents, Marcus and Christine (Christensen) Smith on July 6, 1888, at Mackey, Iowa, in Boone County. He was baptized at his home on October 1, 1888, by Pastor Louis W. Dornseif. His education included six years of rural school and then he assisted his father in farming and operating a country store. Much of his time was spent in hauling freight for the store. He also spent three years as a painter. On January 29, 1913, he was united in marriage to Beatrice York of Gilbert Iowa, by Rev. Golden at the Methodist Church in Boone, Iowa. In 1915, they came to his father's farm near Hazel Run, Minnesota, and there were engaged in farming until 1950 when ill health forced him to retire. They moved to Clarkfield in 1963, and the same year in January, observed their golden wedding anniversary. Harry entered the Clarkfield Community Hospital on Monday, April 29, 1968, after a fall. He passed away on May 9, 1968, at the age of 79 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Margaret, and a grandson, Maurice Jacobson. Surviving are his wife, Beatrice; seven children: Harold of Clarkfield, Lt. Col. James W. (Bill) of El Paso, Texas, Pansy (Mrs. LeRoy Elliott) of Minneapolis, Eileen (Mrs. Carl Stensrud) of Clarkfield, Florence, (Mrs. Marvin Bruns) of Porter, Eldora (Mrs. A.R. Caufield) of Pulaski, New York, and Beatrice (Mrs. George S. Silver) of St. Paul; seventeen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers: William M. Smith of Boone, Iowa, and Andrew T. Smth of Kansas City, Missouri; one sister, Miss Mayme B. Smith of Portland, Oregon; and several nieces and nephews. Harry was active in church, school and civic affairs. He was a Sunday School superintendent for many years, a member of the first co-op creamery board, a member of the school board, assessor of Friendship Township, and interested in various other community affairs.
