Harold Eugene Smith was born February 7, 1915, in Gilbert, Iowa, to Beatrice and Harry D. Smith. They moved to Minnesota when Harold was three weeks old. He attended school in Clarkfield, Minnesota, and graduated in 1934. In May of 1941, Harold was inducted into service and was a member of the U.S. Army 20th Infantry, 6th Division. He served in the Pacific Theatre. During his four years of service, he was decorated with the purple heart and silver star. During a ten day furlough, he returned to Clarkfield and he and Alice Droen were married on June 20, 1942. Harold started farming as soon as he was discharged from the service in 1945. He served as Township Assessor and Clerk of Lisbon Township until April of 1991. He was Sunday School Treasurer of Clarkfield Lutheran Church for many years and active in other church activities. In December of 1974, Harold underwent cancer surgery and again in February of 1988. He suffered a stroke in April of 1991 from which he never fully recovered. Harold passed away on July 16, 1991, at the Clarkfield Care Center, Clarkfield, Minnesota. Harold enjoyed farming, working outdoors, visiting with family and friends and spending time with his grandchildren. Harold is survived by his wife, Alice; children, Rich, Harry and Pam Smith and Mary and Mickey Hegna; grandchildren, Michelle and Eric Olson, Michael West, Matthew, David and Aaron Smith, Sarah and Susanna Hegna; great grandson, Jordan Olson; four sisters, Eileen (Mrs. Carl Stensrud) of Clarkfield, Minnesota, Florence (Mrs. Marvin Bruns) of Minneota, Minnesota, Eldora (Mrs. James Walker) of Leesburg, Florida and Bea (Mrs. George Silver) of St. Paul, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Pansy; and one brother, J. Wm. Smith.
