Harold F. Berg was born April 14, 1919, at his parents home southwest of Clarkfield, Minnesota. He lived in this house for 84 years. Harold was primarily a farmer, a lifestyle he learned from his parents, Carl and Caroline Berg. As a young man, Harold drove school bus for Clarkfield Public Schools. Although he himself was only able to attend school through the eighth grade, he valued education highly and often spoke with great affection of the children he met during those years he drove the school bus. Harold married Myrna Beveridge Miottel at Clarkfield Lutheran Church on July 10, 1960. He gave up driving bus and devoted his time to the Custom Corn Shelling business, to tending his fields and to helping Myrna raise her daughter Rozella. Harold and Myrna Berg devoted their lives to helping others and supporting the city of Clarkfield. If they knew someone needed food or shelter, they opened their home and set a place at their kitchen table. On January 1, 1993, Harold lost his wife to cancer. He continued to farm and to garden, and to deliver the fruits of his garden to members of his wide circle of friends and family. Harold left his lifelong home in March 2003 to enter the Valhalla Assisted Living Apartments of Clarkfield after a bout of illness. Even while he allowed himself to receive the services his body required, he looked for ways to be generous to others. Harold died suddenly Tuesday morning, September 30, 2003, at the Clarkfield Care Center where he was recovering from a recent gall bladder surgery. Harold was preceded in death by his beloved wife Myrna; his parents Carl and Caroline Berg; his sisters: Mamie, Christine, Joella, Judy, and Clara; his brothers: Arne, Clarence, Wilhelm (Bill) and Arthur; and his foster brother Alfred Hagren. Harold is survived by his step-daughter Rozella and her husband George Smith of Melrose, Minnesota; three granddaughters: Michealle and her husband Scott Gibson of Paynesville, Minnesota, Melanie and her husband Kurt Hofmann of Brooten, Minnesota, and Vonnie Smith of Brooten, Minnesota; one grandson: Jeremy Smith and his fiance Emily Lieser; and two great grandchildren: Caitlin May and Gavin Ryder Hofmann. He is also survived by five sisters-in-law: Inez Berg, Edith Berg, Ardis Berg, Jeannette Lange, and Marion Beveridge; and nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.
