Sharkey
March 31, 1902 – July 17, 1999
Harland C. Sharkey was born March 31, 1902, to William J. and Eva (Brock) Sharkey near Webster City, Iowa, where he grew as a boy. In 1915, he moved with his folks to a farm eight miles west of Hanley Falls, Minnesota. He attended District #45 in Normania Township of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, and finished the 8th grade. He also attended Busener College for two years. He started farming west of Hanely Falls in 1927, where he lived until 1936 when he bought a farm in the vicinity of Lynd, Minnesota. On April 11, 1928, he married Viola Reimestad. To this union two children were born: Harold and William C. He attended Hemnes Lutheran Church near Minneota, Minnesota, where he was baptized and confirmed in 1945. In 1944 he bought a farm one mile west of Hanley Falls and became a member of Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church. His wife, Viola, died in 1962. He had quit farming in 1957 and did carpenter work for several years. Harland was by nature, a quiet man, but was know Internationally as a breeder and judge of fancy poultry. He judged poultry for several years at the Minnesota State Fair and American Poultry Congress at Waterloo, Iowa. He was asked to judge the World Poultry Congress in London, England, but was unable to do so. He judged as many as seven Couny Fairs some falls. He was better known as a breeder and showman of Hampshire hogs. Harland won championships at many state and national shows. In 1966 he married Edna Berre Reishus. They lived on the farm and spent time on his hobby, refinishing furniture. In 1987 they moved to Hanely Falls where they enjoyed gardening and yard work until February of 1999, when they moved to Fieldcrest at Cottonwood, Minnesota. He was a 4-H Leader and School Board Member in Lyon County. Also a 4-H Leader in Normania Township. He served as Clerk in District #45 and also Sandnes Township. He and Edna were members of the Hanley Falls Senior Citzens. Harland passed away on Saturday, July 17, 1999, at his home at Fieldcrest, Cottonwood, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, Edna, of Cottonwood; sons: Harold (Ruth) Sharkey and William Sharkey of Hanley Falls; three step children: Jean Avis Cleugh (Cameron) of Hanley Falls, Jaurold Reishus (Norma) of Cottonwood, and Karen Sandberg of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; and sister Helen Reishus. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; his parents; three brothers: Harold, Harry, and Howard; sister Hallie Vik; daughter-in-law Wanda Sharkey; son-in-law Robert Sandberg; and one grandson.
