Harland Douglas
Rowberg
August 12, 1922 – June 21, 2004
Harland Douglas Rowberg was born to his parents Mabel (Gustafson) and Edwin Rowberg on August 12, 1922, in Hanley Falls, Minnesota. He attended school and graduated from Hanley Falls High School in 1940. He attended Augsburg College and graduated in 1948. Harland is a World War II veteran, serving his country from July 1943 to April 1946 aboard the USS West Virginia. He taught school in Fosston, Minnesota, and Hanley Falls, Minnesota. He also worked for Gambles Western Auto Management in California. He took over the family farm outside of Hanley Falls in 1953 and continued farming until 1989 when they moved to Cottonwood, Minnesota. Harland worked for the University of Minnesota as a Mediator from 1986 until 2003. On August 20, 1960, Harland and Betty Arlene Olson were united in marriage at the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls. Two sons were born to them, Stephen and Michael. Harland was very active in the community. He served as clerk and assessor of Sandnes Township, DFL Chairman of Yellow Medicine County, 7th District Chairman for Hubert H. Humphrey, Church Council of Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church, Board Member of Farmers Co-op Elevator, Board Member of Hanley Falls Co-op Lumber Co., Board Member of the Cottonwood Country Club and an active member of the American Legion Post #127 in Hanley Falls. Harland loved to golf, bowl, play cards, travel, do crossword puzzles, and garden. One of the highlights of his life was speaking to the Presidents Economic Council to explain farm credit mediation. Harland lost his battle with cancer and died on June 21, 2004, at the Minneota Manner, Minneota, Minnesota, at the age of 81. He will be greatly missed by his sons Stephen of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Michael of Andover, Minnesota; brother Philip (and Betty) Rowberg of Murrieta, California; sister Marge (and Kerman) Albin of Granite Falls, Minnesota; many cousins; nieces; nephews; and countless friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty; parents Mabel and Edwin; and brother Lloyd. Blessed be Harland's memory among us.
