IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hannah (Nelson)
Coover
February 11, 1875 – June 23, 1952
Mrs. Hannah Coover, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Nelson, was born in Swede Prairie Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, the eldest of a family of eight children, on February 11, 1875. Her death marks the passing of another of Swede Prairie's pioneer women. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the early Swede Home Church of which her parents were among the founders. Mrs. Coover grew to womanhood in this community, with the exception of a few years spent in Minneapolis. In the year of 1906 she journeyed to the South Dakota frontier where she took a claim. It was while Proving Up that she met Machall Coover of Rensileer, Indiana, who was also Proving Up on an adjoining claim. On April 8th, 1907, she was united in marriage to Mr. Coover. The ceremony took place in Swede Prairie. On April 16th, 1907, Mr. and Mrs. Machall Coover started for South Dakota and began their married life near Vivian, later moving to Lakes Andes in 1913, where Mr. Coover preceded in death on July 12, 1931. Here in Dakota all six surviving children were born: Irene (Mrs. Merton Young), Gladys (Mrs. J.A. Josefson), Harriet (Mrs. Vernon Thostenson), Ruth, Iona (Mrs. Winfred Peterson) and Quinton. In 1937 Mrs. Coover and family moved back to her early home in Swede Prairie. The old homestead has since been her home until her death. Hannah Nelson Coover will always be remembered by all who knew her as a person of great energy, ambition and integrity, possessing a most cheerful and kind dispositiaon which won for her enumerable friends and the profound devotion of her family. Though her life was filled with hard work, sorrows and difficulties, she lived a full and useful life and died steadfast in the faith that had been her comfort and solace throughout her life. The Swede Home Church has been Mrs. Coover's spiritual home and she was a member of the Martha Aid. Mrs. Coover passed away after a short illness, June 23, 1952, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Josefson, in Westerheim Township, Lyon County, Minnesota, at the age of 77 years. Left to mourn her death are the above named children; ten grandchildren; and four sisters: Mrs. Julia Severson, Mrs. Andrew Severson, Mrs. Anna Hanson, all of Clarkfield, and Mrs. Otto Friberg of Minneapolis; and one brother, Oscar Nelson of Clarkfield.
