Hallie Honor
(Sharkey) Vik

Hallie Honor Vik was born on March 1, 1907 to William and Eva (Brock) Sharkey at Webster City, Iowa. The family moved to Yellow Medicine County when she was a young girl. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. On April 19, 1997 she died at the Clarkfield Care Center at the age of 90 years, 1 month, and 19 days. Hallie graduated from Clarkfield High School and Kahler School of Nursing at Rochester, Minnesota. She was the first nurse at the Clarkfield Community Hospital and continued to serve the community as the Clarkfield School nurse for 26 years. She worked to promote good health, cared for and touched many children's lives. Hallie loved and served her church in many ways such as Sunday School teacher, member and officer of the church women, Bible Study groups, and was one of the first woman council members. Some of her community involvements were: 4-H leader, Hospital Auxiliary, Homemakers, Garden Club, American Red Cross and Minnesota 8th District Nurses Association. One year she was selected as Yellow Medicine Senior Citizen of the year. Other activities that enriched her life and others were rosemaling, ceramics, hardanger, crocheting, gardening, painting, woodworking and candle making. On February 4, 1931 she was secretly united in marriage to Reuben G. Vik at Cottonwood, MN. At that time, nurses were not allowed to practice their profession if they were married. To this union the following children were born: Darlene (David) Shaw, Cresco, IA; twins R. Darrell (Yvonne) Buffalo, MN and Roseann; Hallie (Ronald) Anderson, Fargo, ND; Wilma Barnett, Inglewood, CA; and Sonja (Jake) Kemen of St. Paul, MN. Roseann died shortly after birth. She is survived by her children; 17 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by brother Harland Sharkey of Hanley Falls, MN; sister Helen Reishus of Rapid City, SD; several brothers and sisters-in-law; cousins; and nieces and nephews. Hallie was preceded in death by her husband; daughter; parents, brothers Harold, Harry, and Howard; two grandchildren; one great grandchild, and one son-in-law.
