Obituary

Gustav O. Haaland was born August 14, 1906, to Gabriel and Barbara (Fenn) Haaland on their farm in Friendship Township, south of Clarkfield, Minnesota. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith. He attended school in Pleasant View School District 28. He was confirmed at the Israel Lutheran Church. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran church until it closed. Gustav married Mildred Olson, June 24, 1934, in Milbank, South Dakota. To this union a daughter Beverly May was born, August 28, 1939. Gustav farmed and later worked for Knute Thompson and Sons, doing road construction for 26 years. Later he worked for Severson Tiling and also for David Johnson Construction before retiring at the age of 80. Gustav enjoyed having coffee and visiting with his many friends. He enjoyed singing in both English and Norwegian. He was always proud of his Norwegian heritage and fluent in the Norwegian Language. He was a lifetime member of the Nordfjord Lagt. Gustav passed away on Monday December 6, 1993, at Canby Community Health Services. He was 87 years old. Gustav is survived by wife Mildred; daughter Beverly, Canby, Minnesota; brothers: Gerhard and Karl; sisters: Minnie Christensen, Annie Christensen, Mabel Brandt, and Helen May Leasman. Also brother-in-law: Hanford Christensen; nephew: Roger Olson and family; brothers-in-law: Martin, Kenneth, and George Olson; and sister-in-law: Nora Ross; and many neices and nephews. Gustav was preceded in death by his father and mother; infant daughter in 1938; brothers: Ole and Kenneth; sisters: Hannah Evenson, Gladys Christensen, and Christine Aakvik; niece: Karen Haaland; and nephew: Greg Brandt.
