IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gordon Alfred
Johnson
August 14, 1919
Gordon Alfred Johnson was born August 14, 1919, to Carl and Annie (Dahl) Johnson, rural Stony Run Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. Following school, Gordy had many jobs. He helped on the farm, worked at a gas station and went to North Dakota to help on a Threshing Team. Gordy entered the United States Army and served in WWII as a cook. He even served a meal for General Patton. After the service he met and married Orvella Long. They were married on October 14, 1945, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar, Minnesota. To this union three children were born: Wayne Gordon, Brenda Faye, and Brian Allen. Gordy and Orvella were married for 60 wonderful years. Gordon worked most of his life as a plumber and pipe fitter and owned his own plumbing business in Clarkfield, Minnesota, before selling it and moving to Willmar, Minnesota, where he was a plumber at Lindquist plumbing and heating. After a back injury, the Johnson's moved to Hazel Run, Minnesota, where he started working as a plumber, school bus driver, and custodian. In 1968 they moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota, and he joined the Plumbers Union and was a plumber there. In 1975 the family moved back to Hazel Run where Gordy started enjoying his retirement. He was very active in the Hazel Run Lutheran Church and the Men's Supper, in which he enjoyed making Oyster Stew. He was honored to be the mayor of Hazel Run and was active in the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed cooking for others so he started hiring himself out to do BBQ's for special occasions and used his own 'secret recipe'. He enjoyed going to auctions and garage sales and loved a 'good deal'. He also enjoyed going to Spicer to the lake although he didn't enjoy untangling the fish lines that his granddaughters always messed up. Both Gordy and Orvella were big supporters of their granddaughters and always enjoyed spending time with them and going to all their school functions. Later in life, Gordy and Orvella spent a year at Copper Glen in Montevideo, Minnesota, before moving to Dawson, Minnesota, to reside at Johnson Memorial Home until his death on Thursday, November 23, 2006, at the age of 87 years, 3 months, and 9 days. He is survived by his son Wayne of Boyd, Minnesota; daughter Brenda (Ken) Haskamp of Princeton, Minnesota; brother Walter (Mae) Johnson; granddaughters: Jody (Randy) Moseng, Jill (Kevin) Kemen, Jolene (Jason) Sorenson, Missy and Angie Haskamp. He is also survived by great grandsons: Cameron Kemen and Jager Sorenson; and other great grandchildren: Kayla, Alyssa, Ricky and Gerrit. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Orvella in January; son Brian Allen; daughter-in-law Mary Deon Johnson; brother Clifford; and sister Mildred Odegard. Blessed be his memory.
