IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gertrude (Nilson)
Anderson
October 4, 1875 – July 6, 1965
Gertrude Nilson Anderson was the oldest of four children born to Gertrude Andersdatter Byfuglien and Nils Nilson on October 4, 1875, of Bruflat, Valdres, Norway. She attended school at Oslo, Norway, and studied to become a nurse or midwife. She worked in Norway for a time before deciding to come to America. She was accompanied by her younger sister, Nicoline, in 1900. She worked for Dr. Robertson at Cottonwood, Minnesota, for a year. On December 28, 1901, she was united in marriage to Andrew J. Anderson of Cottonwood. They made their home on a farm in Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, with the exception of a few years spent in Clarkfield, Minnesota. To this union ten children were born, five of whom died in infancy. In 1910 Gertrude and Andrew took a trip back to Norway and again in 1948. Her husband preceded her in death on April 27, 1956. Also preceding her were five children, two sisters, Olave and Nicoline of Bruflat, Norway; and one brother, Andrs, and one grandson, Gordon. Mrs. Anderson was a member of the St. Lucas Church and has been a life member of the St. Lucas Aid. She had been making her home with the children the last years. On May 1, 1964, she became a resident of the Madison Lutheran Home at Madison, Minnesota. She passed away at the Madison Hospital on Tuesday morning, July 6, 1965, at the age of 89 years, from complications following a stroke. This quiet and kind person will be missed by her children: Johannes Anderson and Gerhard Anderson of Cottonwood, Nils Anderson of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Anna (Mrs. Sverre Lien) of Milaca, Minnesota, and Gunhild (Mrs. Ted Trandahl) of Dawson, Minnesota; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
