Gerhard Johan Nelson, 89, died February 26, 1985, at his home in Montevideo, Minnesota. Services were held at Community Bible Church of Montevideo on Saturday, March 2, 1985, 10:30 a.m., with Pastors Philip Sorensen, James Ferguson, and Peter Dorn officiating. Organist was Mrs. James Rightler and solists were Mr. David Rupp and Mr. Vernon Zempel. He was born September 2, 1895, in Skaanesik, Norway, to parents Sjur and Britta (Skalnes) Nilson. He came to America in 1903 with his mother, two sisters and a brother. He made his home with an uncle at Ortley, South Dakota, until he was 15, at which time he went back to Iowa. He was made a United States citizen at the time he joined the army in 1917. He served for several months overseas in Co.D313E 88th Division U.S.A. in the 1st World War. He started farming in 1923 at Belview, Minnesota, and came to Clarkfield, Minnesota, in 1943 where he farmed until he retired at age 75. He and his wife moved to Montevideo in 1978. He was married to Vivian Iva Williams on February 24, 1939. He is survived by wife Vivian; daughter, Rhoda Nelson and husband Phillip and one child, Sarah Joy of Clarkfield; a daughter, Marlene Gorton and husband Marquand and children Britta-Catherine and Marq of Kathmandu, Napal; son, Philip and wife Karen and children Cheryl, Julie and Deanna of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; daughter, Shirley of Montevideo; and daughter, Loralee Van Gorp and husband Norman and children Peder, Emmett and Matthew of Montevideo; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by infant twins, his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
