Gene S. Johnson was born on April 26, 1926, at Clarkfield, Minnesota, to parents Basil and Geneva (Oakland) Johnson. He was one of eight siblings. He was baptized on July 8, 1926, and confirmed November 1, 1953, at Clarkfield Lutheran Church. Gene attended and graduated from Clarkfield High School and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for Auto Body. He served in the United States Navy from April of 1944 to May of 1946. He was in the South Pacific aboard the USS Portland during World War II. Gene and Elaine E. Pieper were married on November 30, 1952, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City, Minnesota. They were the parents of sons: Bradley and Steven; and daughters Brenda and Kristin. He operated Johnson Tiling for 35 years, while he and Elaine made their home in Clarkfield. He enjoyed hunting and fishing trips. He was active in the American Legion and the Boy Scouts. Gene and Elaine enjoyed spending the winter months of the year in the warmer climate of Arizona. Gene passed away at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital, Montevideo, Minnesota, on Monday evening, November 13, 2006, at the age of 80 years, 6 months, and 18 days. He is survived by his wife, Elaine and his children: Bradley (and Susan) of Clarkfield; Steven (and Bonnie) of Wayzata, Minnesota, Brenda (and Paul) Moe of Alexandria, Minnesota, and Kristin (and Lyle) Boike of Montevideo, Minnesota. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: David Johnson, Darrin Johnson, Brent Johnson, Rachel Johnson, James Moe, Lisa Bitzan, Ryan Boike and Amanda Boike; three great grandchildren: Alexis Kalhoff, McKenna Moe, and Skylar Bitzan; and siblings: Edward Johnson, Myrtle (and Richard) Osmundson, Mentor (and Donna) Johnson, Orda Reitan, Virginia Johnson and Burnet Aase. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert and nephew Jeff. Blessed be his memory.
