Garfield Bernard Broughton was born December 15, 1914 on his family farm in Westerheim Township (Lyon County) to parents George K. and Inger (Amundson) Broughton. As a young child, he was baptized at St. Lucas Lutheran Church and on June 9, 1929 he was confirmed at St. Lucas. Garfield attended Westerheim Country School District #3. He played catcher for the 'Westerheim Wildcats' Youth Baseball Team. He took over the family farm at age 15, following the death of his father. Garfield married Adeline Rosella Johnson on December 23, 1944 at the Cottonwood Parsonage. This union was blessed with two sons: Gene and Dennis. During the introduction of electricity to the rural area, Garfield wired several homes. He loved to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed buying cattle. He was active in several farm organizations. His favorite pasttimes included visiting with others, listening to the radio, especially the Minnesota Twins Baseball Team. Garfield was a life long member of St. Lucas Lutheran Church. Garfield passed away early Tuesday morning, June 25, at the Merit Care Health Center in Fargo, ND at the age of 81 years, 6 months, and 11 days. He is survived by his wife, Adeline and children: Dennis (and Linda) Broughton and Gene (and Darlene) Broughton and grandchildren Mark, Scott, and Sarah Broughton. He is also survived by sisters Mabel Enga and Myrtle Anderson and several nieces and nephews. Garfield was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Grace Myhre and Antonia Broughton. He will be greatly missed.
