Carl Engel

Floyd Carl Engel was born on December 5, 1907, in Hardwick, (Rock Co.) Minnesota, the eldest son of Karl Wilhelm and Alvina Anna Marie (Lorenz) Engel. He was baptized on March 22, 1908, in Hardwick, Minnesota, and would later, on May 8, 1938, become a confirmed member of Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls. Floyd lived in Hardwick until the age of seven years and then in 1914 moved with his family to Hanley Falls, Minnesota. He lived the remainder of his life in Hanley Falls. He attended grade school and high school in Hanley Falls and graduated as Salutatorian of his class in 1924. Following graduation, Floyd farmed with his father and worked on the Ed Eye farm. He then worked for the Cottonwood Co-op Oil Company. He worked for the Co-op for over 40 hears, serving in several different positions. Floyd married Frieda Arlene Brock on March 23, 1938. They were the parents of six children: Ronald, Jerome, Bruce, Kathy, Becky and Debra. During his life, Floyd, was an active member of the Masons, the Eastern Star and the Hanley Falls City Council. He served on various committees of the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church Council and was on the Building Committee when the new entry to the church was added. He was on the Hanley Falls Fire Department for over 40 years and was Fire Chief for 20 years. He was one of the organizers of the Hanley Falls Smelt Fry. He played, coached and managed the American Legion and local town baseball teams for many years. He was a member of the SW Minnesota Baseball Umpire's Association. During his life he enjoyed baseball, music, dancing, going to "the lake" and gardening. Floyd had been a resident of the Clarkfield Care Center. He passed away on Monday, May 17, 1993, at the Granite Falls Hospital at the age of 85 years. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Frieda and his family, sons: Ronald D. Engel and wife (Delores) of Anoka, Minnesota; Jerome D. Engel and wife (Rachel) of Cannon Falls, Minnesota; and L. Bruce Engel and wife (Carol) of Hanley Falls, Minnesota. Also his daughters: Kathy Bennett and husband (Gary) of Granite Falls, Minnesota; Becky Abrahamson and husband (Tom) of Greensburg, Pennsylvania; and Debra K. Larson and husband (Jeff) of Naples, Florida. Survivors also include his brothers: Stan Engel of Hanley Falls, Minnesota; and Vernon Engel of Wood Lake, Minnesota; 16 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Alvina Engel and his brother, Earle.
