Florence Velde, 83, of Clarkfield, Minnesota, died Tuesday, October 6, 1985, at the Clarkfield Care Center, where she was a resident. Florence was born April 28, 1902, to Jeremiah and Rubena (Morton) Palmer. She was raised on a cattle ranch in Dunn County in Western North Dakota, where her parents were pioneer homesteaders. Florence graduated from Dickinson High School, attended college in Fargo, North Dakota, and Dickinson State Teachers College, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin. She married Omar White on February 3, 1925. From this union five children were born, David of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Janice of St. Paul, Minnesota, Sally of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Jeremiah of Boulder, Colorado, and Gretchen of Santa Cruz, California. On December 19, 1953, Florence married Melvin Velde of Clarkfield. She has resided in Clarkfieid for the past 26 years, with the exception of time spent in Wyoming and Alaska teaching. She was an elementary school teacher for 22 years, teaching in North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, California, Alaska, Maynard, Minnesota, and Clarkfield, Minnesota. Florence was a member of the Clarkfield Study Club, Hospital Auxiliary, Circle of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church, and the WTCU. Florence Velde is survived by five children; fifteen grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and her husband Melvin.
