Obituary

Mr. F. Howard Squire was born on a farm near Cashton, Wisconsin, on November 2, 1875, to parents Samuel and Julia (Knapp) Squire. When he was 11 years old he moved with his parents, six brothers and three sisters to Wood Lake, Minnesota, living there until 1891 when they moved to Hanley Falls, Minnesota, and built up the farm just on the south edge of town. Mr. Squire had a very interesting childhood as he has written about his boyhood days on the farm. In 1899 he traveled up to North Dakota and filed a Homestead. By borrowing a little money on the Homestead he was able to work his way through Hamline University. He graduated in 1906 and then came back and taught school in Hanley Falls. He never married, traveled a lot and in 1922 he was a U.S. Deputy Marshall in North Texas. He loved to sing and all through his life he has sung with many choirs, including Southern Methodist at the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. He was an active member of the Methodist Church all his life. He lived many winters in St. Petersburg, Florida, and was active in singing at Salvation Army Concerts. He is survived by several nieces and nephews who were in attendance, including Lloyd Brown of Watson, Minnesota. He spent his later years in Granite Falls, Minnesota, where he enjoyed visiting with his many friends. He passed away peacefully on May 18, 1970, at the Granite Falls Hospital, at the age of 94 years. The music heard at the funeral service were recordings by Mr. Squire when he was 82 years of age.
