Evelyn Winifred (Nelson) Christensen was born June 27, 1924, at Madison, Minnesota, to Bert and Mathilda (Natvig) Nelson. She was baptized at Garfield Lutheran Church and confirmed at Hazel Run Lutheran Church. She graduated from Clarkfield High School, Clarkfield, Minnesota, in 1942 and attended National Defense School in Glenwood, Minnesota, where she made several lifetime friends. She was a "Rosie the Riveter" in Detroit, Michigan and Minneapolis. She returned to Hazel Run after the war, and helped her parents run Nelson's Cafe. On June 10, 1951, Evelyn married Herbert T. Christensen of rural Clarkfield. They farmed just outside of Clarkfield for many years. Evelyn was a member of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church, Ladies Aide and Circle, and a member of the Clarkfield American Auxiliary. She enjoyed many years of bowling on the "Early Bird League" with the Asgrow Loons. Evelyn loved doing handiwork more than housework. She did beautiful hardanger, quilting, cross-stitch and sewing. She loved baking, especially Norwegian foods. She was a loving wife and mother and will be missed deeply by her family and friends. She passed away peacefully, Saturday evening, March 1, 2003, at Luther Haven in Montevideo, Minnesota, at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 26 days. She is survived by her husband, Herbert of Clarkfield; son Bob and wife Nancy of El Jebel, Colorado, and daughter Patty and her friend, Martin Hallman, of Clarkfield. Also surviving are sisters Madlyn Zak of Williamsville, New York, and Dorothy Gramer of Granite Falls, Minnesota; and sisters-in-law: Luella Stokke, Clara Christensen and Darlene Christensen. She is also survived by her special dog, "Lucky." She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother. Blessed be her memory.
