Eugene Gerhard Westre was born April 26, 1900, the son of Lars and Cecelia (Lund) Westre, at Thor, Iowa. He was baptized in the Ullensvang Church at Thor by Pastor Sovde. The family moved to Clarkfield in 1907 where he was confirmed in 1915 by Pastor O.T. Storaasli in the Clarkfield Lutheran Church. He farmed until the year 1936 when he moved to Clarkfield. In 1940, he and his wife Margaret moved to Minneapolis where he was employed as a machinist. He was united in marriage to Anne Petersen, October 4, 1954, and lived in Minneapolis until his death. A lover of music, he enjoyed singing in the church choir and Hauge Male Chorus for several years. He also played in the Clarkfield band for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Esping Westre; his parents; three brothers: one in infancy, Oscar and Lloyd; and a sister, Charlotte; one brother-in-law, Orville Husby. Surviving are his wife, Anne; three step-children: Carol, Stanley and Dorothy; eleven step- grandchildren; one brother, Walter; and two sisters: Gladys (Mrs. Arden Jurgenson) and Mrs. Elise Husby; two sisters-in-law: Ethel and Pheme Westre; one brother-in law, Arden Jurgenson; twelve nephews and three nieces.
