Eugene Peter Meyer was born June 6, 1920 at Wolsey, South Dakota to William C. and Olga (Schiebe) Meyer. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended school in Wolsey, SD. On December 14, 1941, Eugene married Doris Ernst. He worked as a farm hand, at the Clarkfield Drying Plant and Tri Line Farmers Elevator, Hazel Run. Eugene served his country during World War II in the Army. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Army of Occupation Medal Japan, Overseas Service Bar, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in August 1946. He was an active member of Anderson-Tongen American Legion Post for the past 40 years. Holding offices of Commander and the past several years as Finance Officer. After moving to Hazel Run in 1965, he became an active member of the Hazel Run Lutheran Church. He has served on the cemetery board, usher, sang in the choir and most recently as janitor. He served on the Hazel Run City Council for the past 30 years. He passed away Wednesday, May 21, 1997 at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital. Eugene is survived by his wife Doris of Hazel Run, children Derrald & Sandee Meyer, Long Lake; Norman & Sherrie Meyer, Mound; and Kathy Meyer of Hazel Run. Grandchildren Kimberlee & Joe Linder, Mound; Kirk & Toni Meyer, Lakeville; Kent & Kathy Meyer, Woodbury; Kristen & Brent Nolby, Monticello; Matthew Meyer, Moorhead; and Michelle Meyer, Hazel Run. Great Grandchildren Jessica and Sammi Jo Linder, McKenna Meyer, and Ben Meyer. Brothers Roland & (Phyllis) of Tucson, AZ; Robert & (Sally), Wolsey, SD; William & (Esther), Sioux Falls, SD; Bruce & (Glenice), Dewey, AZ. Sisters Ruth Brown, Fairfax, VA; Mildred Vance, Spearfish, SD; Maxine & (Lou) Stricter, Hobe Sound, FL; Beverly Hodson, San Lorenzo, CA; and Norma Jean & (Volney) Baatrup, Antioch, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
