Esther Petrine Krogstad was born April 9, 1904, in Estherville, Iowa, to parents Andrew and Petra (Olson) Krogstad. She was the eighth child and third daughter of Andrew and Petra. At age 9, her family moved by train to Sacred Heart, Minnesota. In 1922 they moved to a farm near Hazel Run, Minnesota. Esther met William (Bill) Johnson while the family farmed near Hazel Run. They were married May 3, 1928, in the Hazel Run Lutheran Church. To this union three sons were born: Willis, Floyd and Dennis. Esther and Bill retired from farming and moved to Granite Falls in the early 1960s. Bill passed away in January of 1980. Esther was a very good cook and liked to do handiwork, such as crocheting, embroidering, quilting and knitting. She kept many house plants and enjoyed exchanging plant slips and patterns with friends and relatives. She loved traveling and made it a point to make it to the Minnesota State Fair each summer. She also traveled to Norway, Italy, Florida and Arizona. She was a member of the Hazel Run Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher. She was active in the church W.E.L.C.A. and Roadside Garden Club. She moved into Granite Ridge Place, Granite Falls, Minnesota, in January of 1998 and then to the Granite Manor in June of 2003. She passed away at the Manor on Sunday, August 16, 2009, at the age of 105 years, 4 months and 7 days. She is survived by sons: Willis (Arlyss) Johnson of Granite Falls and Floyd (Yvonne) Johnson of Fridley, Minnesota; grandchildren: Dean (Jennifer) Johnson, DeEtte (Clayton) Swalstad, Shawn (Charles) Hipp, Shannon (Laurie) Johnson, Dana (Sheila) Johnson, Zane Johnson, Kier (Julie) Johnson, Nicole (Jochen) Kamp; great grandchildren: Kirsten (Jeff) Tjosaas, Kenton Johnson, Naomi (Guy) Rowlands, Mara (Jacob) Johnson, Carl and Ryan Hipp, Tom and Daniel Johnson, Nick and Erica Johnson, Ian, Drew and Will Johnson and Mattias Kamp; great great grandchildren: Rebecca and Tyler Rowlands, Kaiden and Mason Tjosaas; one sister-in-law, Myrtle Krogstad; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Bill; infant son, Dennis; parents; brothers: Albert, Olaf, Carl, Gilford, Arthur, Chester, Edward; and sisters: Clara, Agnes, Hilda and Anna; daughter-in-law Eleanor Johnson; and infant great granddaughter LeeAnn Lenore Swalstad. She was a very gentle and gracious lady, loved her family and watching her grandchildren grow up.
