Obituary

Ernest C. Fjerkenstad was born January 22, 1925, to parents John and Olga (Grefsrud) Fjerkenstad, of rural Boyd, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church of Boyd. He attended Boyd Country School. Ernest enlisted in the US Navy in 1944 and served in the South Pacific. Following an honorable discharge in 1946, he returned home and started farming. Ernest was united in marriage to Joyce Larson on November 6, 1948. To this union six children were born: Ronald, Linda, Nancy, Sandra, Jill, and Lori. Ernie and Joyce lived on their farm near Boyd. For several years, he worked at a Rental Company in Eugene, Oregon, returning to Boyd in the 1970s to farm. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church of Boyd. He was actively involved in the American Ag. Movement, American Legion of Boyd, VFW of Dawson, and the DAV. He was President of the Lac qui Parle American Cancer Society for seven years. Ernest was a cancer survivor and was instrumental in starting the LQP Relay for Life. He was a successful seed corn dealer for several years, winning numerous sales awards. During the winter, he and Joyce would stay in Southern California, where he enjoyed running a produce stand and working as a volunteer in the Palm Springs Air Museum. Ernie passed away on Friday, October 26, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he had been a patient for several weeks. He had reached the age of 76 years, 9 months and 4 days. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of Montevideo, Minnesota; his children: Ronald, Linda (and Tom) Nelson, Nancy, Sandra (and Chris) Budel, Jill (and John) Storlien, and Lori. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Trina and Anton, Heather and Ben, Kenny and Matt, Joe and Jess; and two great grandchildren: Caitlin and Ethan. He is also survived by his brother, Melbourne; sisters: Ruby Wiegers, Ruth Hanson, and Arlene Hegna; and many nieces and nephews. Ernie will always be remembered for his zest for life, delicious oranges, and unique salesmanship as owner of E-Mart. Blessed be the memory of a friend.
