IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Emil John
Skaug
August 22, 1882 – March 19, 1971
Emil John Skaug was born in Oslo, Norway, on August 22, 1882, the son of Jorgen and Josephine (Berg) Skaug. He emigrated to America at the age of six weeks and lived in the Clarkfield, Minnesota area his entire life. His family belonged to the present Clarkfield Lutheran Church. On December 1, 1910, he was united in marriage to Amy Charlotte Youngmark. The family lived in their present home from 1912 until last fall when Emil and his wife went to the Madison Lutheran Home. He retired from the mail service on November 1, 1949. The two observed their 60th wedding anniversary December, 1970. Since their marriage, Emil and his wife have been members at Augustana Lutheran Church where he was active in the Men's Society over fifty years. He was secretary of the County Mail Carriers' Association for over thirty years and a member of the State Executive Board for three years. He was known for his spice and humor. Emil's life as a mail carrier could perhaps reveal more history in his 41 years, 2 1/2 months of service from the turn of the century in the horse and buggy days than any other mail carrier in the entire area. From daybreak to dark, he toiled on narrow roads of deep ruts in snow and mud, making his 28-mile route, every day including Christmas Day as well as weekends. Often he had to change teams enroute. Later, when the automobile came into use, his route became 60 miles. He passed away on March 19, 1971, at the age of 88 years. He is survived by his wife, Amy, and their threee children: Cleo (Mrs. Juel Kirkeby) of Minneapolis, Allen of Bloomington, Minnesota, and Stanley of Omaha, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Melvin of Clarkfield; and two sisters: Ema (Mrs. Myrlin Flugstad) and Athalia Skaug, both of Minneapolis.
