Obituary

Elsie C. (Wilson) Halvorson (May 31, 1918 ~ November 18, 2011) Elsie Carolyn Wilson Halvorson was born on May 31, 1918, in Hazel Run Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, to parents Gerhard and Cora (Wilson) Wilson. She was baptized at Bergen Lutheran Church and confirmed at Hazel Run Lutheran Church. She attended the Roadside Country School and later graduated from Granite Falls High School. She married Herman D. Halvorson and to this union their daughter Kaye was born on February 28, 1936. Herman and Elsie always lived and farmed in the Hazel Run area. Elsie was a member of Hazel Run Lutheran Church and was a Sunday School teacher there for many years. She had many fond memories of her students and classes and loved to reminisce about them. Elsie always helped Herman with the farming and loved to drive tractor, which she continued to do for Willis, Dean and Shannon for nearly 25 years following Herman's passing. She lived on her farm until the time she entered the Granite Falls Manor in October of 2006. She will always be remembered for her love of the color "brown" and for having the best kool- aide ever in her refrigerator. It was sweet black-cherry and always served ice cold. (She claimed she made it with just 1/2 the sugar!) She and Herman always enjoyed going to auctions, and visiting with friends and neighbors. She also loved doing crossword puzzles, refinishing old furniture and watching the birds and wildlife out of her kitchen window. The coffee pot was always on and the little glass covered jars on her table filled with cookies and nuts, ready for visitors whenever they stopped in. She especially enjoyed the calls and visits from her family. Elsie passed away peacefully at the Granite Falls Manor on Friday evening, November 18th, 2011, a the age of 93 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerhard and Cora Wilson, husband Herman D. Halvorson, daughter and son-in-law Kaye Bergliot Elaine Halvorson Mattis and Norm Mattis, and sisters: Ina Risa, Avis Monson, Beverly Thompson and Shirley Allchin. She is survived by her three grandchildren: Kristi (Jeff) Carius of Boulder, Colorado, Pam (Terry) Gardner of Des Moines, Iowa, and Tommy (Sherri) Mattis of Wheaton, Minnesota; five great grandchildren: C.J. Bohnen, McKynzi Bohnen, Shad Bohnen, Matt Gardner and Chaz Mattis and several nieces and nephews. In Loving Memory of Elsie C.
