IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elsie M.
(Toombs) Halvorson
April 19, 1908 – April 19, 1908
Elsie M. Halvorson was born on April 19, 1908, to parents Ernest George and Hattie Luella (McMullen) Toombs at Hampton, Minnesota. She was one of six children born to them. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at Clarkfield Lutheran Church in 1947. The family moved to the Dawson, Minnesota area when she was a small child, where she remained until she was married. Elsie worked as a Nannie in Minneapolis, Minnesota, prior to her moving to Clarkfield, Minnesota. She was working at Cliff's Café in Clarkfield when she met Gerhard "Abie" Halvorson, who was a young businessman operating the produce. Elsie and Abie were married on October 9, 1941 at Madison, Minnesota. They made their first home in an apartment over the Tandberg Shoe Store. Elsie had many jobs in Clarkfield. She worked at the Corner Store, Forsberg's Market, the Cream Station and was a Nurses Aid at the Clarkfield Care Center. It was there that she became good longtime friends with Kathy Jacobson. Abie passed away in 1974 and at that time Elsie left her home in Clarkfield and became a resident of the Valhalla Apartments, which would be her home for the next 21 years. She was a member of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed gardening and did much wall papering for friends in the Clarkfield area. Elsie became a resident of the Clarkfield Care Center in November of 2004, where she remained until her death on Thursday, November 23, 2006, at the age of 98 years, 7 months, and 4 days. She is survived by her two nieces: Geraldine (and Harold) Christianson of Volga, South Dakota, and Marilyn (and Vern) Johnson of Prior Lake, Minnesota; one nephew Robert (and Marilyn) Wolford of Litchfield, Minnesota; her Godchild, Mark Christianson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and other nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her very special friends Kenneth and Kathy Jacobson. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gerhard; brothers Raymond and Clayton; sisters Bessie Wolford, Stella Ellefson and little sister Luella Marie Toombs. Blessed be her memory.
