Ellen Haaland was born March 15, 1864, in Skaane, Lingham, Sweden, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ola Granberg. She was baptized and confirmed in Sweden, immigrating to America in 1888. For a time she lived in St. Paul, where she had a brother, Nels Granberg. Engaged in housework in the cities until the fall of 1897, Ellen married Mr. Swen Foss and came west to Yellow Medicine County to settle down. Mr. Foss died in March, 1902. On June 3, 1903, she married Reinert Haaland, and for a time lived in Clarkfield, Minnesota, while Mr. Haaland was rural mail carrier. Then they moved to the farm four miles south and one mile west of Clarkfield, where she lived continuously until her death at the Clarkfield Community Hospital, March 1, 1953, at the age of 88 years, eleven months and fifteen days. Mrs. Haaland had been in failing health and confined to a chair most of the time since she broke a hip in 1939. She leaves to mourn her death, besides her husband, a niece, Lillian Granberg, of Chicago.
