Ellef Halvorson was born in the district of Sandhered, Telemarken, Norway, on September 15, 1855, the son of Halvor and Gunhild (Bjornsdatter) Halvorson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of Norway. He came to America in 1885 and settled first at Rio, Wisconsin, for a year, then in 1886 he came to Hazel Run, Minnesota, where he did mason work until he started farming.
