Obituary

Eleanor was born on April 3, 1930, in Hanley Falls, Minnesota, the daughter of Wilhelm and Erna (Niklasen) Ueland. She was baptized at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church, and attended Lome Country School. Her family moved to Hazel Run, Minnesota, when she was six and she finished her elementary years at Hazel Run Elementary. She was confirmed at Hazel Run Lutheran Church, graduated from Granite Falls High School, Granite Falls, Minnesota, in 1948, and attended business college in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she also worked as a comptometer operator. She married Willis Johnson on December 9, 1950, and they moved to Germany where Willis served in the Army. During this time, Eleanor was employed as a secretary in the civil service. Moving back to the family farm in Hazel Run, she settled in as a great mom and homemaker for her four children, Dean, DeEtte, Shawn and Shannon and kept things going smoothly on the farm. She enjoyed volunteering for her children's activities, whether it was baking treats, sewing cheerleading outfits or coordinating carpools. She also worked at the Granite Falls High School as an English Resource Director. She was an ardent perpetual fan and supportive at all her children's sporting activities, recitals and concerts. She became a leader for the Hazel Run Happy Hour 4-H Club and taught baking, gardening and sewing. Eleanor loved to sew. For her children's weddings she used her creative talents to design a wedding gown, two veils, several attendant and flower girl dresses plus a child's tux. She also loved to walk, golf, bowl, decorate and play 'Uno' with her grandchildren. Eleanor had a zest for her involvement in Homemakers Club, Legion Auxiliary, Gourmet Club and the Bounders RV Group. Eleanor was a caregiver for family and friends in many different ways. She always took time to write cards and letters, listen, advise, lend a helping hand, babysit the grandchildren, mend a pair of pants, or attend to the grandmothers. She loved to entertain friends and family with her gourmet meals. As an active member of the Hazel Run Lutheran Church, she was WELCA president, Sunday School teacher, choir member, Luther League Counselor, altar guild member and Ladies Aide Bible study leader for the Esther Circle. During the winter months she loved to travel, especially in their RV. They spent many winters in Arizona with friends and in Florida with family. Summers revolved around family reunions and taking grandsons on their annual fishing trip. Eleanor and Willis built their dream home at Skyline Drive in Granite Falls and moved in one year ago. Eleanor passed away on December 6, 1999, at the age of 69 years. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Willis Johnson; her mother, Erna Ueland; her mother-in-law, Esther Johnson; her children: Dean and Jennifer Johnson (Granite Falls, Minnesota), DeEtte and Clayton Swalstad (Satellite Beach, Florida), Shawn and Charlie Hipp (St. Paul, Minnesota) and Shannon and Laurie Johnson (Hazel Run, Minnesota); her grandchildren: Naomi Swalstad, Kirsten Johnson, Mara Swalstad, Thomas Johnson, Kenton Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Carl Hipp and Ryan Hipp. She is also survived by her brothers Donald Ueland, Shakopee, Minnesota, and Carold Ueland, Cleveland, Ohio; her sister Wilma Budde, St. Louis Park, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Wilhelm Ueland and granddaughter LeeAnn Swalstad. May the memory of Eleanor live on in our hearts. The Eleanor Johnson Memorial "Do Something for Jesus" Fund has been developed at Hazel Run Lutheran Church to celebrate her wish for her children and grandchildren. Blessed be Eleanor's memory and our new found respect for the time we have with each other.
