Edna Elizabeth
(Berre) Sharkey
May 17, 1909 – July 3, 1962
Edna Elizabeth Berre was born May 17, 1909, to parents, John and Polla (Kise) Berre in Normania Township of Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. She was baptized by Rev. Haugan and confirmed by Rev. N. L. Otterstad at St. Lucas Lutheran Church. She married Alfred Reishus on December 27, 1931. They lived on a farm in Normania Township. She was the mother of three children: Jean Avis, Jerold Palmer, and Karen Annette. The family enjoyed singing in the choir at St. Lucas Lutheran for many years. Alfred passed away on July 3, 1962. She married Harland Sharkey of Hanley Falls, Minnesota, on May 28, 1966. They lived on a farm and later in Hanley Falls. They were members of the Hanley Falls Senior Citizens and enjoyed an afternoon of cards. Harland passed away on July 17, 1999. Edna was an active member of St. Lucas Lutheran Church as well as Yellow Medicine Lutheran and the WELCA activities of both churches. Everyone enjoyed listening to Edna's readings on various programs. She enjoyed quilting and crocheting and sharing these crafts at the Sr. Citizens Bazaars and special gifts for the family. Morning coffee with her neighborhood group was always the highlight of her day. Edna was born in a house that had been used as a Post Office in olden times by the name of "Stavanger Post Office". When she married Harland, she went to live in a house that had also been used as a Post Office in pioneer times by the name of "Silliard". Her home on the Berre Farm had also been used for church services. On July 27, 2002, Edna Sharkey passed away at the Granite Falls Hospital in Granite Falls, Minnesota, at the age of 93 years, 2 months, and 9 days. She is survived by her son, Jerold (and Norma) Reishus at home and daughters Jean Avis (and Cameron) Cleugh of Hanley Falls, and Karen Sandberg of Arvada, Colorado. She is also survived by stepsons Harold (and Ruth) Sharkey, and William Sharkey of Hanley Falls; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands Alfred Reishus and Harland Sharkey; three sisters; three brothers; and daughter-in-law Wanda Sharkey.
