Obituary

REV. E. T. FYRAND Edmore Tillman Fyrand was born October 12, 1905, to Truls Fyrand and Caroline (Haugstad) Fyrand near Kenyon, Minnesota, on a farm that was homesteaded by his grandparents in 1854. The youngest of ten children, he attended grammar school in a country schoolhouse on his family farm. He was baptized and confirmed in Gol Lutheran Church near Kenyon. He was graduated from Kenyon High School in 1922 and attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in languages and history in 1927. At Luther, he also played clarinet in the college band. He taught Latin and history, served as principal and directed bands and orchestras in public high schools at Hecla, South Dakota, and Dawson, Minnesota. He also pursued graduate studies at the University of Minnesota. After ten years of high school teaching, he felt a call to change vocations and began theological studies at Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, graduating in 1941 with a bachelor of theology degree. He was ordained into the ministry of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America on July 20, 1941. He married Hannah Christine Okerlund on October 17, 1941. They began their life work in the parish ministry at Finley, North Dakota, where they served the Finley, Ostervold and Sheyenne Valley congregations. In 1948 they continued their ministry in the Walcott and Gol congregations, Walcott, North Dakota, where they remained until 1959 when they accepted a call to Hazel Run and Bergen congregations, Hazel Run, Minnesota. They retired from full-time ministry in 1974, and moved to the home they built in Montevideo, Minnesota, where he was asked to serve as visitation pastor at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. At various times during the thirty-five years of his ministry, he also conducted services in Norwegian. He and his wife were blessed with two daughters. He officiated when Carol married Bob Lacey in 1970 and when Anne married Don Bakalyar in 1976. He also baptized his granddaughter, Kristin Lacey. On October 28, 1976, he died in Minneapolis after suffering a massive stroke. He is survived by his wife; children and granddaughter; by two brothers: Oscar and Leonard Fyrand of Kenyon; and by four sisters: Tilda and Selma Fyrand of Kenyon, Esther Fyrand of Rochester, Minnesota, and Mrs. Minnie Johnston of Milaca, Minnesota. Three sisters preceded him in death. The family pays tribute to a gentle and loving husband, father and brother and to a faithful pastor. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If it is to be life in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.
