Edith Frances
(Okrina) Stengel
October 13, 1908 – December 2, 1991
Edith Okrina was born October 13, 1908, in Stanley Township, Marshall, Minnesota to Frank and Tressia Sanderson Okrina. She attended Stanley Township Country School and high school in Marshall. Edith went on to Teachers College in Tracy, Minnesota, and graduated in 1929. Her 18 year career began in 1930, teaching in Lyon and Yellow Medicine Counties. Amiel Stengel and Edith were married in 1933, and they lived on a farm near Marshall. Their son, Loren Dean Stengel was born in 1934. They moved to a farm near Hanley Falls, Minnesota, in 1943. Edith resided on this farm keeping a keen eye on the crops, working in the garden, and enjoying her flowers. Edith died at the age of 83 on December 2, 1991, after a brief illness, in the Granite Falls Municipal Hospital. Edith was a life long member of the Presbyterian Church. She served on many boards and committees in the former First Presbyterian Church of Cottonwood. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amiel on December 3, 1951; her parents; two brothers, Roy and Leonard; one sister, Ethel Zellmer; and one grandchild. Edith is survived by her son, Loren and his wife Kathy; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mae Stengel of Beresford, South Dakota, and Eva Champion of Lyons, New York; three Okrina brothers, Floyd of Minneota, Franklin of Cottonwood, and Elmer of Minneota.
