Obituary

Earl Howard Stueland, son of Hans and Minnie (Mikkelsen) Stueland, was born on August 12, 1913, at the farm home near Boyd, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended Country School District #14 and graduated from Clarkfield High School, Clarkfield, Minnesota, in 1932. Earl sang in the school choir and was a member of the Men's Quartet. He lived at home with his parents and bought his first farm with his brother, Richard. During World War II, he did all the farm work on the two farms with the help of his sister, Evelyn. Earl married Helen Johnson on April 11, 1943, at the bride's parents' farm, in the presence of their immediate families and a few close friends. They continued to farm and bought their farm in Stony Run Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, where they lived for the next 54 years. Many of those years, Earl and his dearest friend, Douglas Nelson, worked and owned farm machinery together. In 2001, Earl and Helen sold their farm to Jerry Nelson and then moved later that same year into a duplex in Granite Falls, Minnesota. Earl was a faithful member of Bergen Lutheran Church of rural Montevideo, Minnesota. He sang in the church choir for over 40 years. He served on various church committee positions and was President of the remodeling of the addition to Bergen Church. He also served as County President of the Farm Bureau. Earl passed away on Sunday morning, December 15, 2002, at the Granite Falls Hospital at the age of 89 years, 4 months and 3 days. He is survived by his wife Helen of Granite Falls; daughters: Mary Ann (and Art) Behr of Granite Falls, Carol (and Greg) Hamlin of St. Paul, Minnesota, Lorraine (and Michael) Loesch of Mason, Ohio; son Douglas (and Sandra) of Modesto, California; 10 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sister Evelyn Kruger of Willmar, Minnesota; sister-in-law Bergliot Stueland of Clarkfield, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
