IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Earl Leroy
Lund
March 12, 1912
Earl Leroy Lund was born March 12, 1912, to parents Isaac and Nellie (Olson) Lund at his grandfather, A.B. Lund's, homestead on the Minnesota River near Dawson, Minnesota. At the age of 5, his family moved to Dawson. He spent his boyhood years exploring and enjoying the Minnesota river with his friends. He was baptized and confirmed at Riverside Lutheran Church at Dawson. Earl attended Dawson Public School, leaving during his 12th year due to his father's illness. The next several years were spent assisting his family, working in the CCC's, WPA, and PWA. He also served with the National Guard. In 1936, he started work with the Minneapolis-St. Louis Railroad as a Relief Agent and Telegrapher. On June 16, 1938, he married Lyla J. Mork. Earl and Lyla lived in Madison, Minnesota. He continued his career with the Railroad in Iowa at Moorland and then a permanent agent position at Calander, Iowa. He transferred to Clarkfield, Minnesota, in 1953 and finished his career at Dawson after the close of the Clarkfield Depot with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. Earl and Lyla ran a small greenhouse in Clarkfield for several years. He was an active member in his community and church activities through the years and also was a member of the Sons of Norway. In 1970 he retired from the Railroad and started traveling south for the winters, going to Texas, Arizona, and California. In 1980, his wife, Lyla passed away. Earl married Mary K. Mattson on August 30, 1993, and they continued to spend winters in California and summers in Clarkfield. Earl had many and varied interests ranging from vegetable and flower gardening, animal husbandry, family genealogy, rocks and fossils, and reading a wide variety of subjects. He enjoyed visiting with anyone he met. He was especially proud of his Norwegian heritage and spoke the language from childhood. Earl passed away on Tuesday morning, December 12, 2000, at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital, Montevideo, Minnesota, after a long battle with cancer. He was 88 years and 9 months old. Earl is survived by his wife, Mary, of Clarkfield; two sons: Allan (and Cathie) of Gardenerville, Nevada, and Edward (and Gail) of Fresno, California; two daughters: Joan Nott of Hutchinson, Minnesota, and Nancy (and James) Williamson of Northfield, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lyla; brother Victor Lund; granddaughter Marci Lund; and grandson Joel Nott. Blessed be the memory of Earl Lund.
