Obituary

Dorothy Emily (Hartfiel) Haaland was born on January 5, 1921, at their farm home, the daughter of Wilhelm and Lydia Hartfiel. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, in Tyro Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. She attended country school in District #49 and then attended and graduated from Central High School in Montevideo, Minnesota, in 1938. She then attended teacher training at Windom Junior College in Montevideo and later attended summer school at St. Cloud Teachers College, St. Cloud, Minnesota. Dorothy taught country school in District #49. On December 30, 1942, Dorothy was united in marriage to Erling Haaland at Zion Lutheran Church in Tyro Township. This marriage was blessed with three children: Earl, Daniel, and Julie. Dorothy and Erling resided and farmed near Clarkfield until 1979 when they moved to their lake home on Lake Minnewaska, Starbuck, Minnesota. Dorothy was a loving mother and homemaker, and always a teacher at heart. She was an active member of Clarkfield Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for many years, as well as a member of Fron Lutheran Church in Starbuck, where she was a church council member and active in circle and FLCW. Dorothy loved to garden and especially enjoyed their strawberry patch every year. She loved visits with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, always making their favorite sweets. Dorothy especially enjoyed remembering people with cards and looked forward to the mail every day. This past summer and fall Dorothy and Erling became residents of the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. She passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2005, at the age of 84 years, 10 months, and 15 days. She is survived by her husband, Erling Haaland of Starbuck, children: Earl (Karen McKinley) Haaland of Ft. Myers, Florida, Daniel (Carol) Haaland of Gary, South Dakota, and Julie (David) Drommerhausen of Albert Lea, Minnesota. Also surviving are grandchildren: Heidi (Desmond) Dodd, Douglas (Stephanie) Haaland, Angie (Brian) Irvine, Darrin (Sarah) Haaland, Emily Drommerhausen, and Eric Drommerhausen; and great grandchildren Maeve and Colm Dodd, Camden and Kieran Haaland, Tiana, Jennifer, and Maci Irvine and Morgan Haaland. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Comfort Quesnell and Norma Hartfiel; brother-in-law Leonard Kramer; and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Wilhelm and Lydia Hartfiel; brothers Milroy Hartfiel and DeForest Hartfiel; and daughter-in-law Marilyn Haaland. Blessed be her memory.
